

Replaced all that with 3D models rendered at the same spot in space. We found that the game internally used polar coordinates and had a fair bit of code that converted those 2D and chose the right sized sprites. My favorite was Gyruss which is somewhat like Space Invaders of Galaxian but with a 3rd person view from behind the player's ship so you see enemies come toward you in pseudo-3D. For instance, some exhaust smoke on the cars in Frogger. Mostly it was applying higher-resolution tiles and sprites but some had particle effects added. I think we referred to it as "reskinning". Frogger, Gauntlet, Joust, Gyruss and a bunch of others.


Ouch.This hybrid approach was used for a series of arcade games on XArcade for the Xbox 360. That means, in the course of one week, there were more people who returned the game to get their money back than there were others who actually purchased and kept it. Maybe parents took offense to the creepy demonic art on its box? Maybe the game was too tough for players to handle? Who knows why, but Demon's Crest somehow managed to earn an interesting distinction among the entire SNES library – it became the only Super Nintendo title in history to actual register negative sales at one point. But because, for whatever reason, it bombed in sales. Not because it was a bad game – we wouldn't be honoring it if it were. This one, unfortunately, didn't do that well. After that memorable supporting role, someone at Capcom saw something more for the flying demon and decided to give him his own series – including Gargoyle's Quest on the Game Boy, Gargoyle's Quest II on the NES and this game, their 16-bit sequel Demon's Crest.
